I am so glad we've met. I have wanted to 'not think about this' but turning a blind eye is not going to help the next horse on the death wagon. I will spread your weblink to those I know and can reach.

Bighorn sheep taken from inside our house:

I hope that you will come out to Boulder City and see the sheep. And be sure to bring your camera. My husband worked as a park ranger two summers ago and knows all the great places to go around the area. We would love to show you around.

Our front yard (I hope this comes through):

OK, this is scarey. I live right up the hill from the Hacienda. We had Easter dinner there last Sunday. You drove right past our house to get to the hotel. We're on the hill as you go down towards the lake. We are on an outcroping of the mountain, with 32 steps to the entry into our house, which is built into the rocks. We just love it here. Right now, we have desert flowers in bloom everywhere.

If you are trying to find wild horses by driving around, you probably won't see them. They are in small herds up in the mountains, away from the roads. I have not seen one without knowing where specifically to go in all my 28 years here in southern Nevada. The best time to come here is in October. It's really pretty in the Spring and there are foals but it's also very windy.

My daughter competes in dressage. She's in her early 40's (I'm 62) and never married, and her life is wrapped around this sport. A few years ago, when she was just starting out, she fell off her horse and suffered a fractured pelvis. She was in terrible pain for months and it was then that I decided never to get back up on a horse, no matter how tempted.

I am totally against horse slaughter. I have no problem with humane euthanasia. Just by definition, slaughter is "carnage, butchering, massacre." If you have ever watched a video tape of what happens in a slaughterhouse, you would be sick to your stomach. Horses are very different from cattle and they react differently. I would no more accept horse slaughter than I would accept dog or cat slaughter. These animals are pets and should be treated better by their humans. They were not raised to be butchered and eaten. OK, off my bandwagon.

BTW, the owner of the Hacienda is the Ensign family. John Ensign is our US Senator, a vet, and sponsor of the Prevention of Horse Cruelty Act of 2009. I have been told that there will be another wild horse summit this year, possibly in So. Dakota. That would be just wonderful as there are three herds of wild horses on a reservation there that were relocated in a deal with the BLM when their herds were zeroed out. Right now I'm working on adding some information on horse abuse and neglect for my web site. Seems like the updating just never ends. Your horse Cash looks so nice and healthy and happy. I work with some of the horse rescues and look at emaciated horses every day.

Hi Shirley! The next time you come out, contact me by email (endinghorseslaughter@live.com) or give me a phone call (702-293-1974). I know where there are wild horses about 30 min. north of Las Vegas and I can take you there. They come down from the mountains to drink from a spring. It's good to go very early in the morning and you might have to wear your hiking boots, but I can almost guarantee an up close visit. I believe the day we were in Oatman was the 9th of Dec., a cold and windy day. My husband had the buffalo burger at the hotel and I helped him eat the homemade chips. I wanted to see the honeymoon room of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard but it was closed. I took over 100 pix of the burros. I have some funny stories to tell about them, too. I went armed with carrots and peppermints for them. Didn't realize how aggressive they were until they ripped my jacket open, jumped up on me and tore the bag of mints from me. They started to eat the mints with the wrappers on! It took about six of us to wrangle them away. I just fell in love with the babies, they were so cute. Our house overlooks Lake Mead, about 30 miles outside Vegas and at the edge of a national recreation area. We moved here from Vegas when we retired 3 years ago. My husband had been a physician for many years and I worked in hospital admin. before working at his office. I am originally from Ohio, my family is still there. Talk about coincidence, we also stayed at the Gold Nugget Laughlin! We stayed in one of the suites and it was so nice I didn't want to leave. Oh, forgot to tell you, we also have bighorn sheep here. They will be coming down from the mountains in a couple weeks in early May and will be here until the end of Dec. They are quite the site to see, you just have to visit us next time you come. I have been working against slaughter and preservation for the wild horses. That web site referred to is mine. I also attended the wild horse summit last fall in Vegas. It was wonderful meeting like-minded people and hearing what the BLM had to say. I do not have a horse but my daughter does. Also, my best friend lives in Pahrump, NV (cowboy country) and she has a horse that was a rescue. We share a Delphi message board where we post news about horses. We have an area here called "Horseman's Park" where people can keep their horses. There are lots of horses there and our high school rodeo team's corrals. I know some people with two mustangs from the Nellis Range that are kept there. They are absolutely beautiful. There is a real misconception about wild horses. I hope you will look at the endinghorseslaughter.com web site when you get a chance. It's a small world, isn't it?
