Oh how neat! It sounds like you see Bighorn sheep like we see deer. My parents have a beautiful farm about an hour from my home. They often have deer in their yard. That never stops being an exciting thing.

I hope we will meet in Nevada. Your husband was a park ranger...I bet he saw some fabulous things! Bring my camera?! Yes, that is a must. The video camera and the digital get lots of use. In the picture you sent of your front yard, what kind of tree is that? I'm guessing you don't have to use the 32 steps on a daily bases? Or maybe that is your built in exercise equipment. When I was a young thing and weighed 100 lbs. we had an apartment that was up 18 steps which I used many times a day. I could use those today!
My brother lives in Ohio. He lives in the country in the Cleveland area. His neighbors have horses with a pasture running along his property. Seems ideal to me but he does not like it. He does feed the horses when they go on vacation. There is a park across the road that has equestrian trails. It would be a dream location to me.
Do you know of anyone that has stayed at the Hacienda? Is it an okay place to stay?
I have many flower pictures from Nevada. My husband is a good sport about stopping often so I can take pics when we are traveling.
WE have three children. Two daughters 39 and 37 and a son 30. None are into horses but I did not have any when they were growing up and they weren't born with that horse gene like many are. Sounds like your daughter must have gotten that gene if she wanted to continue riding after breaking her pelvis. I have had a couple crashes to the ground but lived to tell the stories. Actualy I rode with a cast from a broken ankle for several weeks a couple summers ago. I did not break it riding though. I broke it tripping over the dog sleeping on the living room floor.
What kind of horse does your daughter have? Cash is a Buckskin Quarter Horse. The training barn where I bought Cash and boarded for 3 years had many different kinds of fun and beautiful dressage horses.... Oldenburgs, Warmbloods, Fresians, Hanoverians. And then they did western showing with mostly buckskin & QH. Some Tennesee Walkers came in for training now and then and of course, several Arabians. It was a special place to spend three years. I spent a lot of time watching them train and give lessons. Learned a lot! So many wonderful memories....home away from home. I'd still be there if it hadn't been 35 miles from home and I went at least 5 days a week. Cash is now 3.5 miles from home so I do enjoy that.
Gotta go! Shirley

Hi Barbara!
Wow!!! Now you really have my adrenalin going with a real hope to see some wild horses in real life. If we are not able to come before the end of May we will likely wait till things get cooler again. Quite often Spirit Air runs some specials for under $100 pp round trip and that's what we use to come to Nevada and then we try to come a couple of times a year. From Las Vegas we have been able to head out by car in many directions and see soooo much beauty. .
The last time we came out we stopped at the Hacienda Hotel and Casino to get a bite to eat. We ate a nice buffet lunch and won a few nickels in the slots there. I am thinking this might be very close to you? Do you know if this is a nice place to stay? We enjoy seeing some of the lights etc. of Vegas but then we like to enjoy some of the natural beauty that surrounds it. It amazes me how quickly you go from the bright lights to nearly nothing man made.
I am retired from running our own in home travel agency. I had done that for about 15 years. I loved it for about the first 10 years and then things just got so complicated and not very profitable so I just burnt out and decided it was time to let it go. That was just last August and I'm enjoying not working. I am wondering where the path of life is going to take me now. I really want to do something to help horses. I am thinking I'd like to take some equine horse massage classes but I'd have to do it as a hobby because I'd probably never get the training expenses back. I have a very hard time keeping my hands off others horses, I am just pulled to rub on them. I have had an experience with an abused horse that I became very attached to and we brought some real happiness into each others lives while it was allowed. He was one of the most touching & mind altering experiences in my life and I believe I was that for him too. If the way opens for me to find a way to help horses like this, that is what I would really love to do 'when I grow up'. LOL I'm over 50 and closer to 60 but I still feel like there is something pulling on me to do with horses. 'They say grandkids keep you young...I think horses do!
Were you able to see the picture I sent of my horse Cash? What a treasure! We joke about him being the only cash we have left. But he's worth every penny! As you an see by the pic he is the color of a shiney new penny. We started out green on green 5 years ago. He was just barely 3 when I bought him. So we've learned much together. He was trained well BUT there is some things a three year old has to learn for himself and a more experienced rider would have been wiser but we do okay and are growing slowly. We are just at the point where we want to start getting out and away from the barn and do some lane and trail riding. This does scare me so it's going to have to progress with baby steps. I could hire someone to put the miles on him but I really want to do this myself if I can without heart failure or too many broken bones. My only real concern is if I can handle the situation if something REALLY scares him.
Thanks for giving me some hope to see some wild horses and I will for sure let you know when we can make it out again. We seriously thought about coming out for the Parelli Celebration in Reno this summer but we decided to go to the Celebration in Florida instead. The plan is to tie that in with getting my mother to Florida to visit our daughter. My dad passed away last June so now we are trying to get my mom to Florida so she can swim with some tropical fish and experience feeling young again at Disney.
What kind of riding does your daughter do?
If you have time, I'd love to hear more from you. I am curious about your involvement with the anti-slaughter activities. Are you opposed to all slaughter or how it is being done at this time? After I found out that my abused horse friend had been sent to slaughter I cried a lot! Nothing!!! has ever affected me the way this did. But the worst day was when I got behind a big double tiered stock hauler. That was soooo horrible and made it even more real. I had to pull off the road and just sobbed. I can only be thankful that no one is hurting him any more. But had I been given the chance, if he could not have been made safer with humans I'd have appreciated the opportunity to put him down in a kind loving way. I don't believe it would have come to that but he could be dangerous when he paniced with fear.
Anyway, I'd better quit sitting and get to the barn and sit in a saddle instead of this computer chair. It is a beautiful day here..60 degrees at 2 in the afternoon and a Nevada like clear blue sky.
Cheers! Shirley

Hi Barbara, I think the word is surreal! My husband and I were in Oatman on the 5th of Dec. and it was a very pleasant day. My best guess is that you might have been in Oatman on Sat. the 6th. If that is the case we missed each other by one day. How close we were to having each other in our pictures. We ate across the street from the hotel at an old style watering hole/bar. We did visit the hotel a few years ago and toured the upstairs where they claim to have hauntings. On the 6th we went to visit the London Bridge (and search for wild horses) According to the map put out by the BLM there are herds between Vegas and the London Bridge. It was chilly and windy that day for us.
I had found a ridiculously cheap airfare for the first week of Dec. so we decided it was the right time to make a trip. We stayed in Vegas the first two nights at the Gold Coast, and then went to Laughlin for 4 nts. and stayed at the Golden Nugget and then back to Vegas for another couple of days at the Gold Coast again. We may have walked right past each other at some point. We put lots of miles on our rental car! On the day we went to Oatman I took oodles of pics of the donkeys (esp. the babies). Then we found a large reservation area that had baby lambs....literally 100's of them. They had tied most of the babies by two- -right front leg to left front leg of the other so they looked like they were doing the three legged race. Just as the sun started to reflect a beautiful red off the mountains in the background of my pics the batteries of my camera went dead. It was such a pretty view that we went back the next day at sunset and took more pics of the lambs with another great sunset reflexion. I was so happy to get a second chance get some shots at some really nice views. A couple of days later we headed out from Vegas to see some of Death Valley (and search for wild horses...of course). My digital card got full so I had about 80 shots that had been narrowed down and edited. I changed the memory card shortly after we entered the desert. There is an old gas station site with just the remains of an old stone fireplace and a fence that has been decorated with many pairs of shoes. Maybe you have seen this since you live in Nevada? Got a picture of a dead terangula at this spot too...unusual site for us from Michigan. I better shorten this up before I bore you to death. The short version of the end of this story is that I lost the memory card holder with all my pics from 3/4 of our trip. I was sick cause I'd tried soooo hard to get some good shots and thought I'd been pretty successful. It's very unlikely that I will ever find the memory card holder so I've pretty much given up on that but since it is only abut the size of a charge card, it could possibly fall out of something someday. I do have some movie camera shots of the lambs but not of the donkeys or the London Bredge.
Anyway....as soon as we find a great flight rate we hope to make it out again so I will be checking back with you for some route suggestions to increase our odds of getting to spot some wild horses.
Last May we went to Bryce and Zion National Parks areas and again had a wonderful trip. We love your area of the USA. Michigan offers a lot as far as being pretty with many lakes and wooded areas but Nevada and Utah are very special in our eyes.
Are you a great animal lover? I noticed your link to the horse slaughter web.
I have actually lost a horse to this horrific system that truely breaks my heart. That is another very long story. This is the shot version. I had a strong connection with this previously abused horse that I did not own monetarily but was allowed to play with. I say monetarily cause I know we owned each others hearts. He was taken away one day with no warning and after three months of trying to get the truth as to what had happened to him and help him I got the truth too late. Canada slaughter was my last horrible answer. If you want to hear the longer version, I will share.
Do you have a horse or horses? I'd love to hear about them if you do. I have one quarter horse that makes my day every day. We do Parelli together.
I hope my chit-chat wasn't too much.
Hope to hear back from you.

I love your pictures from Oatman. I took some very similar. The babies were so enjoyable...I couldn't quit clicking that camera. My husband were there the first week of Dec. 09 and had a great afternnon. We have been coming out from Michigan as often as possible and doing lots of road trips in hopes of finding some wild horses. We are still waiting for our first successful sighting of the horses. It looks like you might have seen some wild horses from what is in your pictures. How neat if that is the case!
