Read this National Geographic article yesterday titled, "Spirit of the Shrinking West" by Alexander Fuller. There is some great information in it. One of the quotes from the article that addressed BLM's struggle to manage 258 million acres that really stuck with me was the following:
"These are not - and never were - lands managed for all thing equally, but for the priorities of the age."
According to the article, every year between 5-10,000 horses are removed from the western range. The genetic and behavioral ramifications of this can be devastating for wild horses because they "live in highly structured, hard-won family groups."
Also of note, "about half of all the wild horses that still run free in the U.S live in Nevada."
